MCD to rejuvenate 20 ponds as part of the first phase of the Amrit Sarovar mission
The MCD has decided to rejuvenate and beautify 20 ponds as part of the first phase of the AMRIT Sarovar mission conceptualized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. AMRIT Sarovar Scheme was launched by Prime Minister under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate 75 years of our independence. As part of this program, 75 ponds will be built in each district of the country, which will help solve the problem of groundwater depletion.
MCD has decided to complete the rejuvenation and beautification works of these water bodies by March 31, 2023. The ponds selected under the program are: Dwarka Sec-8 Jahazwala Park spans 1 acre, palam village pond spans 3.5 acres, Masoodpur village pond spans 2 acres, Pana Paposia pond in Narela spans 1.25 acres, Gazipur Village Pond is 1.5 acres, Phase 2 works in Welcome Lake is 32 acres, Naini Lake in Model Town is 6.5 acres for name a few. Naini Lake located at Model Town Phase 2 will be rejuvenated by raising the height of its boundary wall, repairing its pathway and channeling water from the STP plant located in Coronation Park.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will provide funds to MCD for the rejuvenation of these 20 ponds. Water is necessary to sustain human life. Inspired by these words, STPs will be installed near these basins or water from nearby STPs will be channeled to them. In addition, rainwater will also be channeled to these ponds, which will help recharge groundwater.
MCD will beautify these Ponds by arranging pedestrian paths around its periphery and installing gazebos, sheds, benches that will help citizens use them as places of rest and recreation and they will also realize the importance of water.
