Welcome to the Funding Commitment for an Iconic Waterway
Moonee Valley Mayor Samantha Byrne welcomed the announcement by Josh Wilson, Deputy Shadow Minister for the Environment and Peter Khalil, MP for Wills, of a $2.16 million campaign pledge from funding to begin Stage 2 of the Moonee Ponds Creek reimagining if Labor wins the next election.
“This opposition funding pledge endorses the work of the collaborative group Chain of Ponds to transform the creek into an iconic Melbourne waterway,” Mayor Byrne said.
This announcement is the result of a strong partnership between community groups, Council and government agencies with a shared vision to revitalize the creek and its surroundings.
Councilor Byrne said, “Preserving and protecting our waterways is a key Council commitment, and Stage 2 of Moonee Ponds Creek reinvention will continue to positively transform the creek environment, open up a safe and pleasant for residents.
The commitment to Stage 2 is important because the Moonee Ponds Creek catchment is one of Melbourne’s most urbanized creek systems. It was considered a mere drainage and flood channel for years, and we can see it through the degraded environment along its length, including significant areas of concrete surfaces.
“This project transforms both the perception and the reality of the creek for the benefit of all Melbourne residents.”
